What is Chypre?
Chypre (pronounced ‘sheepr’) refers to a fragrance family or perfume accord based on the notes of bergamot, oakmoss and labdanum.
Chypre perfumes typically contrast earthy notes with fresh citrus notes. They are frequently described as mossy, woody, musky, resinous, green and sometimes floral.
As with all perfume concepts, there is a large degree of variation between perfumes in this category. Some perfumes may deviate from the classic combination of notes. Similarly, each perfume formulation has its own unique concentration of the accord’s main ingredients.
The Origin of Chypre
Chypre is a French word which dates back to the Middle Ages. The English translation of this word is ‘Cyprus’.
Founder of Coty, François Coty, popularised what we today recognise as Chypre in 1917. His creation ‘Chypre de Coty’ featured the definitive accord of bergamot, labdanum and oakmoss.
Similar perfumes existed before Coty’s creation and featured the word Chypre in their name. These were based upon a concept relating to the island of Cyprus and have been present in perfumery for many centuries.
