When you know how to apply perfume properly to make it last longer you can make the most of your best perfumes. In this article you’ll discover essential application tips which will improve wear and longevity.
How to Apply Perfume
Apply Straight Onto Skin
Perfumes notes blend with your body’s natural oils, which can enhance the scent and make it unique. Hence, it’s best to apply your perfume straight onto your skin.
Apply After a Shower
Perfume adheres well to skin that contains moisture, so applying post-shower can enhance its staying power. Applying after moisturising can also cause perfume odour molecules to persist for longer.
Don’t Rub Into Skin
Resist the habit of rubbing your wrists together when applying perfume. This can compromise a perfume’s composition. Instead, spray perfume onto the areas you prefer and allow it to dry naturally.
Apply on Pulse Points
Pulse points are areas on your body where blood vessels are closest to the skin which causes these areas to be warmer. Warmth can intensify the effect of odour molecules within perfume. This means that the neck, wrists, and behind the ears can enhance a perfume’s intensity.
Hold the Bottle at a Distance
When spraying perfume, hold the bottle approximately 5 inches from your body. This distance will ensure even distribution of the scent.
Spray Into the Air
For a more diffused, less concentrated application, spray your perfume into the air. As you walk through it will spread evenly across your body and clothes.
How to Make Perfume Last Longer
As well as applying perfume correctly, you can take further steps to increase its staying power and prevent perfume expiry. Here are some tips to give your perfume greater longevity.
Choose a Higher Percentage of Concentrate
Types of perfume with a higher percentage of fragrance concentrate can be stronger and therefore longer lasting. If you’re looking for a perfume to last throughout the day try Eau de Parfum or Extrait de Parfum rather than Eau De Toilette or Eau de Cologne.
Surprisingly however, perfumes with a lower level of fragrance concentrate have a longer overall shelf life. This is because they contain a higher level of ethanol which acts as a preservative.
Store in a Cool, Dark Place
Exposure to heat and light can degrade your perfume’s quality and reduce its potency. Storing your perfume in a cool, dark place on the other hand can help maintain its integrity. Do not store your perfume in a bathroom which will increase exposure to heat and steam. Instead keep it in its original box in a drawer in your bedroom.
Don’t Shake the Bottle
Shaking your perfume bottle can let air in and disrupt the quality of your perfume. Try to keep your bottle upright when not in use and do not shake before applying.
Use Other Scented Products
Use scented products, such as body lotion or shower gel, from the same range as your perfume. By perfume layering in this way you can intensify the fragrance’s staying power over the course of the day.
